ELEVEN

Lacey took a break to fix herself some lunch and to do a little housework. She washed up the breakfast dishes, put in a load of laundry and thought about going to the exercise facility to do a workout. Maybe later. She didn’t want to take too much time when she was chasing down a lead.

Dog with a bone, Sam would say.

She couldn’t deny it.

After she felt like she’d given an adequate amount of time to the mundane chores, she settled once again in front of her laptop. She typed in a search for JoAnn Gilbert.

Neither first nor last name was uncommon, but she gasped at the number of hits in the results: 5418. Obviously she needed to pare that down with a more specialized search.

She typed in the name along with Echo Park. She got quite a few less results, but more often than not found the first name coupled with other last names or vice versa. She drummed her fingers on the table in irritation.

It occurred to her that not only was that a very normal name, but JoAnn was probably married by now and going by a different last name—but what last name?

She turned to social media. On Facebook, she knew, women often included their maiden names just so long-lost friends who didn’t know a married name could still find them. She plugged JoAnn Gilbert into the social site and hit the enter button.

A half dozen hits came up, and Lacey checked out their profiles one by one. The first was a thirty-year-old mother of two deployed to Iraq. Lacey knew her JoAnn Gilbert would be forty-eight now, so she could easily dispense with any that were not about that age. There was a sixty-three-year-old artist; a twenty-something body builder; a fifty-five-year-old grandmother. No one even close.

Lacey switched gears again. She pulled up her favorite genealogy website and plugged the name into census records for 1980.

And got a hit right away. Duncan Gilbert was listed as head of household, with his wife Hope, eight-year-old daughter JoAnn, and twin five-year-old sons Zach and Hunter. Lacey checked the address; it was six numbers different than Sonya’s place. Three houses away.

She went to the 1990 census and found the family again, even eighteen-year-old JoAnn. When she checked the 2000 census, JoAnn showed up on her own in West Hills, California. Then in 2010, she disappeared.

Married? Lacey wondered. Or moved out of the country? Or dead? There was no telling.

Just to cover all the bases, she plugged Duncan into the 2010 census. He and Hope showed up alone in La Jolla, even the twins out on their own by then. Lacey made a note of that. It could come in handy later on.

Her next step was to check marriage records. She found two JoAnn Gilberts, one married in 1903 and one in 2009, but that woman was only twenty years old at the time. Not the one she wanted.

She checked death records. Again, found three with the right name, but for all, Gilbert was the married name with different maiden names.
